Leadership Traits That Are Often Overlooked

The inner state of a person is reflected in their work and how they do their work.

"As a leader, if your team members are afraid to bring a problem or challenge to you as their leader then there is a huge problem with your leadership, not your team". During my early stages of leadership, I was told this hard truth and it stopped me in my tracks. I felt like I had failed my team and let them down. I knew I was accountable for my team's success but didn't realise their failure was my responsibility too. I had to rewind, erase some bad habits and go back to basics. I quickly realised that an atmosphere of openness, transparency and trust were key ingredients in building a winning team.

I have studied & observed several leaders over the years and I have drawn the following conclusions about true leadership.

  • Leadership is not a status or position it's a call to service
  • Leadership is a call to responsibility and accountability
  • Leadership can be a lonely journey but true commitment keeps you going
  • Leadership is not in the title but it's in the results and impact
  • Leadership can be demonstrated at any societal or corporate level
  • A leader is a risk-taker and isn't afraid to make mistakes
  • A leader holds themselves accountable not just for the success of the team but the failures too
  • A leader isn't too proud to say " I am sorry ", "I messed up" , or "Can you please help me?"
  • A leader recognises & appreciates the differences and individuality of people
  • A true leader impacts the lives of others in a positive way
  • A true leader is selfless and giving
  • A true leader is humble
  • A true leader has a listening ear and a heart
  • A true leader dissolves hate and spreads love
  • A true leader is a person of gratitude
  • A true leader is committed to a vision
  • A true leader makes sacrifices for the good of others
  • A true leader inspires and motivates others to leadership

What are your observations of what makes a great leader?
